Basic Information About The Face Lift Procedure

Prepartion for a face lift is no different from that for any other procedure. If your skin is very thin, your face lift surgeon may try and plump it up with several months of Retin- A and glycolic acid prior to the face lift surgery.

On the day of the face lift surgery, the surgeon will draw on your face with you in a sitting position. Once in the operating room, basic anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia will be administered, depending on the preference of your face lift surgeon and the skills of the anesthesiologist. Some plastic surgeons prefer sedation,because there is a lower chance of nausea. Nausea and vomitting are big problems after a face-lift and increase the chance of bleeding.

A solution of local anesthetic and epinephrine, to stop bleeding, is injected into the face. Incisions are made and the tissues are lifted, trimmed of excess skin, and sutured into place. Drains may be placed, in the hope of decreasing fluid collection after surgery. A bulky dressing is then applied, protecting the face and placing gentle pressure to decrease the collection of blood and serum.

This part of the face lift procedure takes about two and four hours. You will also spend a few hours in the recovery room before you are discharged to your room or home.

It is very important to keep your head elevated above the level of your heart for THREE WEEKS following the face lift surgery. If you even bend to pick up something only ONCE, or turn over onto your face in your sleep, you could cause bleeding.It might range from excess bleeding to major collection (hematoma) that requires reoperation of the face lift as an emergency. You'll know that the bleeding is serious if you have new severe pain,rapid swelling and perhaps nausea. The skin may blister and bleed.

The next day, theface lift surgeon will change your dressings and clean your wounds from the face lift. A lighter dressing will be placed. Sometimes no dressing is needed by this time. You may shower on the following day.

After the face lift operation you will look like a victim of assault and battery. Your face will be swollen and bruised very badly. The swelling from the face lift is at its worst at 36-48 hours and then begins to decrease. The face lift surgeon will remove some sutures five to seven days after the surgery and the rest by two weeks. By ten days you will be able to shop for groceries in the next county. By two weeks, your swelling from the face lift should have settled down to where you can go on with your daily routine plus the application of some make-up.

Your swelling will continue to settle for months after surgery. While the swelling goes away,scarring begins. It occurs not only in the incisions around the ears and chin, but also underneath the skin, in the interface between the lifted skin and the underlying tissue. Scarring from the face lift increases and peaks at about three months, then takes the next nine months to settle. During this time the nerves will grow back, causing funny electric sensations in your cheeks. Small lumps are common and will require massage.

Your face lift surgeon will see you in three weeks and then again three months after the face lift surgery. Adittional visits may be scheduled at six months or a year.

During the months following theface lift surgery, you should wear cover-up make up on the incisions. A visit to an anesthetician for a makeup lesson is well worth the expense. Sunblock is essential during the first year after your surgery.
